I can't say I liked the new machine with its thick wings and its enormous Sabre engine, but the day of the Spitfire was practically over in Europe.
—Words from Requiem for a Wren by Nevil Shute, 1955
This is my 1/48th scale model in the markings of one of the handful that shot down a Ju-188 on the edge of the New Forest, near Bulieau, in late may 1944. Nevil Shute, then a developer of weaponry for the navy, came upon the crash scene shorty afterward and he developed it into the plot of his later novel.
